I read (and have re-read) Johnson's book for my first grow -- outdoors, with living soil, and an emphasis on 'organic' practices. Johnson's book presents his tried-and-true method for growing organic cannabis outdoors in a backyard. He emphasizes outdoor seed starts, containers, and a combination of compost/worm castings/peat and various soil amendments, such as Kelp and crabshell meal. It's almost August, and having followed his advice my plants are looking great. While some grow books attempt to cover every possible grow strategy and complications to the point that a new grower is overwhelmed, Johnson covers the essentials: beyond seed, soil, sun, water,and pest management he presents a method for drying and curing cannabis. The book reads a little like talking to your opinionated stoner friend who knows a ton about how to grow and prepare cannabis; on seed selection Johnson writes, "You don't want AUTOs because they're usually lame [af]". For the second edition, I would like to see a little more discussion about autoflowers. I'm growing one this summer, and I like how compact it grows and is already nearing its chop date. And perhaps for those of us in Canada or other cold climates, starting seeds outdoors just isn't possible. The ins and outs of light duty grow lights for starting off seeds would be helpful too. It's an enjoyable read, thought provoking, and well worth the $4.20 price.
